Taken from Hellridemusic.com:
Uh oh. Finnish Goth Metal. You know that has to be the real deal. Goth Metal from sunny climates usually brings to mind disenfranchised overweight and physically unattractive females further alienating themselves with multiple piercings, black dye jobs and the latest Hot Topic gear. Actually, that might be true wherever you find Goth Metal, on second thought. Ugly? Fat? Go Goth. Man it’s a cruel planet, isn’t it? Sucks.
So, I’m not a fan of anything Goth. To me, it’s the soundtrack to the weepy, the weak and the limp wristed. It’s metal devoid of any testosterone or self-respect. But that’s my own trip and in reality, I can’t fault the members of The Lust I Seek because their two tracker here is actually pretty damn well done. Classy arrangements that highlight a pretty heavy guitar for this kind of thing and multiple time changes that are surprising and shows a band that have some experience under their belts. And know how to write a song, no matter how weepy. Also, I might add, great sound and great packaging, all self-financed. Someone spent some money on this sucker.
There are two problems here for me – first, the vocalist is one of those kids who doesn’t have a deep voice but sings like he does. That drives me right up the wall for reasons unknown to me consciously. He does a good job during the death-gargle passages, but when he is whining about walking in the moonlight empty and hated or contemplating suicide over lost loves in that pseudo-deep voice, it bugs me to no end. The second problem for me, is that I’m not a fan of Goth. So that kinda kills it from the start for me.
Despite my personal feelings about the genre and the singer, I at least recognize the overall talent displayed in the compositions. If you are a fan of Goth Metal, you’ll probably enjoy this. If you aren’t, it will probably drive you nuts. The end.
